Playa Norte is the island’s most popular beach and stretches along the entire north end. It offers wide expanses of #whitesand with calm water perfect for #snorkeling. A good snorkeling spot is actually underneath the wooden bridge leading to the Mia Reef Hotel.
Playa Sol is another popular on Isla Mujeres close to the ferry terminal and a short distance from from Playa Norte. Here you will find the same #turquoisewater, white sand and chair and umbrella rentals, but fewer hotels and restaurants than on Playa Norte.
There are several other beaches along the west side of the #island that are open to the public as well. Just look for signs as you are driving.
The Beach Club Garrafon de Castilla is said to be a beautiful place on the Isla Mujeres to escape the hustle and bustle. Against payment of a small entrance fee you can spend the day there and use the facilities. Snorkeling equipment can be rented directly from the Beach Club so you can explore the #underwaterworld.
The heart of tourism on the Isla Mujeres is the Avenida Miguel Hidalgo. Here, souvenir shops line up next to restaurants and bars. During the day it is damn hot due to the sunshine, but in the evening you can take a stroll along the Avenida Miguel Hidalgo.
During your stay on Isla Mujeres you will want to make time to explore the south end of the island where Punta Sur is located. Here you will find rocky shoreline with breathtaking cliff views, sculptures and a lighthouse as well as a serpentine walking path along the ocean.
Isla Contoy is a small paradise with white #sandybeaches, #palmtrees and turquoise blue sea. Here you can swim, lie in the sun, observe crabs, iguanas and pelicans and meet stingrays while snorkeling at Ixlaché Reef. The small island is uninhabited and about 30 kilometres from Isla Mujeres.
Note: Smoking and the use of non biodegradable sun creams are prohibited on Isla Contoy. The island is a nature reserve and a bird sanctuary.
