Welcome to Mullerthal, a Luxembourg region that encourages action and relaxation.
Trip story
Welcome to Mullerthal, a Luxembourg region that encourages action and relaxation. Its rugged landscape invites avid hikers, bikers and climbers to explore its unique terrain. Mullerthal is known for its impressive rock formations, including canyons and gorges that make for a stunning backdrop to any outdoor activity. The 112-kilometer Mullerthal Trail is the region's highlight, offering routes of varying lengths and difficulty. Mullerthal has earned the nickname "Little Switzerland" for its scenic beauty and geological features reminiscent of the Alps. Adding to its charm, the region is dotted with castles and quaint towns.
The Mullerthal Trail winds through the diverse landscapes of eastern Luxembourg. It passes through breathtaking gorges such as the Gorges de Loup and the Räuberhöhle (Robber's Cave), squeezing you between towering rock walls. Key attractions along the way include the picturesque Schiessentümpel waterfall, the historic Hohllay cave known for its man-made origins, and scenic viewpoints such as Aquatower Berdorf and Héikräiz. Finally, Devil's Island, a secluded spot along the trail, is a peaceful escape into nature.
Each fall, Berdorf, a quaint town in the Mullerthal, hosts the Haupeschfest. The festival celebrates local culture with music, art and traditional crafts. Foodies can enjoy Mullerthal specialties at the festival, including paschtéit, a savory pastry filled with meat, and Gromperekichelcher, crispy fried potato cakes that are a regional culinary staple.
In addition to being a hiker's paradise, the Mullerthal is also a popular destination for cyclists and climbers. The region boasts several biking trails suitable for all levels of ability. Wanterbach near Berdorf offers challenging rock faces for climbing enthusiasts, but climbers must obtain a permit and adhere to specific cliffs designated for climbing.
Echternach, Luxembourg's oldest town, is full of history, with its ancient abbey and bustling market square being must-see sights. Beaufort is famous for its majestic medieval castle, romantically set in the countryside.
