How to Get There

The Kepler Track starts and ends near Te Anau, a small town on the edge of Lake Te Anau. You can get to Te Anau by:

  • Car: A 2-hour drive from Queenstown.
  • Bus: Regular services run from Queenstown, Invercargill, and Dunedin.
  • Flights: Queenstown Airport (nearest major airport) connects to domestic and international flights.


Highlights of the Track

Day 1: Te Anau – Luxmore Hut (13.8 km, 5–6 hours)

  • Begin at the Kepler Track Car Park, near the Control Gates of Lake Te Anau.
  • Walk through lush beech forest along the lake before ascending to alpine meadows.
  • Stop at the Limestone Caves (20-minute side trip) for an underground adventure.
  • Arrive at Luxmore Hut, with stunning views over Lake Te Anau.

Day 2: Luxmore Hut – Iris Burn Hut (14.6 km, 5–6 hours)

  • This is the most scenic section, traversing ridgelines with spectacular views over Fiordland.
  • Pass Forest Burn Saddle and Hanging Valley Shelter—great spots for photos.
  • Descend steeply into the Iris Burn Valley and stay overnight at Iris Burn Hut.

Day 3: Iris Burn Hut – Moturau Hut (16.2 km, 5–6 hours)

  • Hike through native forest alongside the Iris Burn River.
  • Take a side trip to Iris Burn Waterfall (20-minute detour).
  • The track gradually flattens out, leading to Moturau Hut, which sits on the shores of Lake Manapouri.

Day 4: Moturau Hut – Te Anau (15.5 km, 4–5 hours)

  • Follow a gentle track through wetlands and beech forest.
  • Stop at Shallow Bay for views of Lake Manapouri.
  • End at the Kepler Track Car Park, completing the loop.

Hut bookings are required during the Great Walks season (October–April) and can be made through the Department of Conservation (DOC) website.

What to Pack

  • Hiking boots (well-broken-in)
  • Warm layers (Fiordland weather is unpredictable)
  • Waterproof jacket & pants
  • Sleeping bag
  • Food & cooking equipment (no food is provided in huts)
  • First aid kit
  • Headlamp (for the Limestone Caves or early morning starts)
  • Map & compass or GPS


Tips for Hikers

  • Book huts early (they fill up fast in peak season).
  • Be prepared for all weather—rain and strong winds are common.
  • Carry insect repellent—sandflies are relentless, especially near lakes and rivers.
  • Check track conditions at the DOC visitor center before setting off.
  • Respect the environment—pack out all trash and stay on marked trails.

  • Day Hikes: If you’re short on time, hike to Luxmore Hut and back in a day (~6–8 hours return).
  • Heli-Hiking: Some operators offer helicopter drop-offs for a luxury hiking experience.
  • Kayaking & Boat Tours: Explore Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri after your trek.
