There are cities that one yearns for all year round and practically always: Paris, Barcelona, London. And then there are places where one hardly wastes a thought and misses a lot. Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and a picturesque city whose townscape has been shaped by different historical epochs. From a political point of view, Ljubljana once belonged to Austria, France, Italy and the German Empire, before it finally was politically bound to #slovenia in 1991. The different affiliations have also left their traces in the city, because Ljubljana not only reminds at some corners of Austria, but also possesses Mediterranean flair.

It's central location in the country couldn't be more suitable, as the city is the economic, political and above all cultural heart of Slovenia. With approximately 293,000 inhabitants, #ljubljana is one of the smallest European capitals. It is never overcrowded - and also never boring. Of course, you can't miss out on the pleasure of a night out, and where better to celebrate than in a city whose inhabitants are on average just 30 years old! 50,000 students provide for the youthful flair and meet in trendy discos, trendy bars or even in rustic pubs where life is toasted with one of the many fantastic types of beer.

The river Ljubljanica meanders through the city once. On both sides of the river there are mostly paths, so that one can walk right next to the river. This will give you a first impression of why Ljubljana has been named European Green Capital in 2016. There are a lot of trees and some small green areas. During this idyllic walk you will quickly forget that you are in a big city.

In Ljubljana you can enjoy a great view from the castle, which is located in the middle of the city. You can reach the castle quickly and effortlessly by cable car for 2,20€ (single ride). The entrance to the cable car is on the north-eastern side of the castle, at Krekov trg 3. Once you get to the top, you can take some time to look around the small castle and visit the museums there if you are interested in history. Or just enjoy the view.

During your visit to Ljubljana you should not miss a short walk through the old town. Along the streets Gornji trg, Stari trg and Mestni trg you will find cute little houses, most of them with cozy cafés or decoration and furnishing shops. Just enjoy the unique atmosphere, take a break with coffee and cake and bring enough time to browse through the small shops.

If you are in Ljubljana on a Friday evening, you have to spend some time at the Food Market "odprta kuhna" (which means "open kitchen") along the Pogačarjev trg. From March to October you can enjoy the Slovenian menu and of course drink here. After your meal, treat yourself to a delicious Slovenian wine, sit down on the steps or the tables provided and enjoy the atmosphere and the lively hustle and bustle of the city. Simply unique and beautiful.

In this guide you will find some suggestions for a sustainable trip to Ljubljana.
