The golden city on the Polish Baltic Sea, the city of amber and Gdańsk goldwater. During the Second World War, Gdańsk was reduced to mere rubble but luckily later rebuilt to become one of the most beautiful cities in #europe. Stroll along Ulica Mariacka along the richly decorated townhouses, small cafés and historic buildings. Let the flair of the colourful old town work its magic on you and feel a breeze of sea air at the city's harbour.
The Polish city really has a lot to offer, so it is completely incomprehensible to us that this destination is still regarded as an insider tip. But all the better for you if you can relax and be enchanted by the idyll and beauty of this historic city.
The centre is small and compact, so the main sights are close together. You can stroll around and take plenty of time to explore. Depending on how long you stay in Gdańsk, you may want to stay close to the city's main attractions to make sure you get the most out of your holiday. You can of course save some money by staying outside Main/Old Town, but you will spend a lot of valuable time going back and forth. Gdańsk is much cheaper than most European cities, so this is one of the few places where you can live in the heart of the city without spending a fortune. Here are some great neighborhoods in Gdańsk, perfect for those looking for conveniently located accommodation.
Neighborhoods
Main Town
This is the neighborhood with a large number of Gdansk attractions, such as the Golden Gate, Mariacka Street, St. Mary’s Basilica, the Royal Way, the Main Town Hall, Długi Targ and Neptune’s Fountain.
Old Town
The Old Town is a residential area, located in the north of Main Town. The Main Railway Station is situated in this district, which makes it well-connected to all important sites in Gdansk and Tricity area.
Wrzeszcz
The hipster neighborhood of Wrzeszcz, also known as the heart of the student community, is located about 4km from the city center. It is a great place to stay if you want to escape the main tourist crowd or just want to get some major shopping done as the area is home to two great malls, Baltycka Gallery and the Centrum Handlowe Manhattan.
Sights
The town hall (Ratusz Głównego Miasta) on the Długi Targ is one of Gdansk's most popular photo motifs and houses the city museum. Just a few metres from the Town Hall, in the centre of the square, is the Fontanna Neptuna (Fountain of Neptune), which has stood directly in front of the Dwór Artusa since 1633. Follow the square in the direction of the Green Gate (Brama Zielona), which you can hardly miss. Here you are on the so-called Royal Way, because when the nobles were driven through Gdansk, they preferred this way.
One of the best things to do in Gdansk is to go for a stroll along the Motlawa River waterfront. Take your time to stroll, to let the sun shine in your face, to eat ice cream or to enjoy a coffee and a piece of warm szarlotka (apple pie).
