In the north of #Morocco lies the famous "blue city" Chefchaouen. It got its name from the blue colour in which the houses and partly also floors in the medina are painted. Translated, #Chefchaouen means "two horns" and refers to two #mountain peaks that can be seen from the city. For many centuries Chefchaouen was considered a Holy City, where access for foreigners was forbidden under threat of death penalty. This is one reason why the medina is still so well preserved today.
The city of Chefchaouen with its unique medina has long since ceased to be an #insider tip, but it is much quieter than, for example, a city trip to Marrakech. But not only the well-known #blue medina fascinates visitors. In the following you will learn what makes Chefchaouen so #special and why this city could be your next destination.
What you can do in Chefchaouen
Just strolling through the blue alleys has something #unique about it. One would love to stop at every corner and take a new #photo. Here, eager photographers can in any case send some very extravagant holiday greetings home, as one decorated house wall is more #beautiful than the next. You'll find that Chefchaouen is not only blue, but also very #colourful. The brightest colours mix with the blue houses in the narrow alleys of the medina. Again and again there are colourful flower pots on the blue house walls. A strong sense of orientation is surely an advantage during the sauntering, for those who have enough of getting lost in the alleyways.
In the medina there are numerous beautiful #cafés from which you can watch the colourful but relaxed hustle and bustle. Moreover, one cannot walk through Chefchaouen without passing one of the small #markets or shops. Here you can mainly buy souvenirs and leather goods. Those who want to make a good bargain must be able to do one thing: Trading.
Our tip for trading: Simple one. Just dare to say no. If you don't like the price, you can always try your luck elsewhere. However, the traders usually call you as soon as you leave the shop and offer you the desired or at least a fair price.
In the surroundings, the God's Bridge and the waterfalls Cascades d'Akchour are the most attractive places. Treat yourself either to a shared taxi that will drop you off nearby or you can walk the whole way to the waterfalls (about 5 hours walk).
Best travel time for Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen is a #relaxed yet #lively city. One day is enough for the medina. In order to explore the surroundings and to relax, we would recommend two to three days in Chefchaouen in any case.
In general one can say that the best time to travel is from March to November. It is driest in Chefchaouen in July and August, but it can get quite warm at this time. In Chefchaouen it rains most often and most heavily between December and February. These are also the coolest months. (Between 12 and 17 degrees C°)
You should be aware of that: Due to the high altitude, it's usually cooler in Chefchaouen than in surrounding towns. It is therefore advisable to have a jacket and especially a rain jacket with you.
