There are only a few #metropolises in Europe where tradition and #modernity meet so controversially and hardly any other big city can be explored on foot as easily as #Salzburg in the northwest of Austria with a population of just over 150,000. The classical and cultural city at the foot of the Eastern #Alps is also the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and enchants not only in the Christmas season with its baroque charm, its small and winding alleys and above all its enchanting #Mountain panorama around the village. We show you why Salzburg should definitely be on your next To-Visit-List!
Important information in advance
Climate
The average annual temperature of Salzburg is just under 9°C, with July often being the hottest (approx. 18°C) and January usually the coldest month (-1.2°C). Although the temperatures in July are pleasantly warm, you should still pack a rain jacket and waterproof clothing, as experience has shown that in the summer months most of the rainfall falls on the Austrian small metropolis.
Salzburg Card
If you are planning a stay of several days, which we highly recommend, buy a Salzburg Card, which gives you free admission to all the city's sights and museums, free travel around the city on all public transport (except the urban railway) as well as the fortress cable car and Salzach boat, and other attractive discounts - e.g. for concerts and events. A 24-hour ticket costs €26, 48 hours are available for €34 and 72 hours for €39. Children between 6-15 years pay half each.
Our highlights
Hohensalzburg Castle - With over 7,000 square metres of built-up area, the #Fortress is one of the largest preserved castle complexes in Europe and also the city's landmark. The best way to reach the fortress is by funicular (included in the Salzburg-Card for free) and you can visit the outer fortress without a guided tour, but for the inner facilities such as the torture chamber or the battlement a guided tour is required. Especially attractive: In summer, the castle staff dresses up and takes visitors on "Special Guided Tours" into 16th century Salzburg. Another absolute highlight is the fantastic #view from the towers of the Salzburg basin with its breathtaking mountains and ranges as well as the wonderful old town of Salzburg!
Mirabell Palace - The castle was built in 1606 and has a beautiful baroque garden open to the public. There you can admire numerous colourful plants as well as the "Dwarf Garden", a green area in which 16 cute little marble dwarves are hidden.
Residenzplatz and Residenzbrunnen - On the magnificent Residenzplatz the Residenzbrunnen is the second largest marble fountain in Europe. If you are lucky enough to be in Salzburg during Christmas time, don't miss the Salzburg #Christmas Market, one of the oldest and most beautiful Christmas markets in the world!
Getreidegasse and Linzergasse - These two alleyways are often called the most beautiful #shopping center in the world and offer numerous great shopping opportunities. In the Getreidegasse numerous enchanting and fascinating traditional businesses as well as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus #Mozart are waiting for you - an absolute must visit. Linzergasse, on the other hand, is a great place to buy clothes and #souvenirs for your friends and families who stayed at home.
Boat tour on the Salzach - Especially in summer there is hardly a more relaxing activity than to discover the beautiful, two-part old town of Salzburg comfortably on a boat. We recommend the boat tour towards #Hellbrunn, where you can have a look at the luxurious villas in the south of the city and the fantastic #panorama formed by the mountain ranges of the Salzburger Land.
Café Konditorei Fürst - Gourmets watch out: In this café in the Brodgasse, right in the heart of Salzburg's old town, the world-famous and irresistible original Mozart balls - small round sugar confections made of pistachio, marzipan and nougat, covered in dark chocolate (austrian name: Mozartkugeln) - are still being produced today (about 10,000 a day!!). An absolute must for gourmets and marzipan lovers!
Staatsbrücke - Inaugurated in 1949, the Salzburg Staatsbrücke is a central traffic junction connecting the old and new town of Salzburg and at the same time the almost perfect photo backdrop to capture a few successful snapshots of the city. During the festival season in summer and at Christmas time, the bridge is festively decorated with all kinds of lights, making it a real eye-catcher.
