Perched on the shores of a glittering alpine lake, Hallstatt is a town unlike any other. This UNESCO World Heritage site is steeped in history and culture, with its roots dating back to prehistoric times. As you explore the town's winding streets, you'll discover stunning architecture, quaint cafes, and a vibrant arts scene. But Hallstatt's true beauty lies in its natural surroundings. From hiking the picturesque trails to exploring the fascinating salt mines, there's no shortage of things to do.

Highlights:

Saltmine:

Descend deep beneath the earth's surface and discover the world of Salzwelten Hallstatt. The oldest salt mine in the world, Salzwelten, has been in operation for over 7,000 years. As you tour the mine, you'll learn about the fascinating history of salt mining and its integral role in the region's development. The tour includes a boat ride across an underground salt lake, and if you dare, you can take a ride down a 64 m-long wooden slide that the miners would use to quickly access the salt mine! In addition to the impressive natural formations you will see underground, the experience also provides a multimedia show that brings the mine's history to life, complete with projections, sounds, and special effects.

Dachstein Giant Ice Cave:

Hallstatt is home to yet another must-see subterranean attraction: the gigantic ice caves of Dachstein. This cave system, one of the largest in the Alps, boasts some of the world's largest and most impressive ice formations. Your guided tour will take you deep into the heart of the cave, where you'll be mesmerized by the glittering walls of ice surrounding you. The cave system is also renowned for its unique acoustics, which create an otherworldly atmosphere that must be experienced to be believed. The cave is located on the Dachstein plateau, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The cable car ride up to the plateau is an adventure, too, with stunning panoramic views throughout the journey. And if one cave system isn't enough for you, you can also tour the nearby Dachstein Mammoth Cave.

Hallstatt Lake:

Stretching over 8.5 kilometers, this lake is fed by snowmelt and springs, ensuring its pristine waters remain cold even in the summer. A boat ride on the lake is a must-do, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the charming town's lake-side towns of Hallstatt, Obertraun and Steeg. Hallstatt, the most famous of the three, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its rich history and picturesque architecture. In Obertraun, you can take a cable car to the top of the Krippenstein mountain for spectacular panoramic views of the lake and surrounding landscape. Finally, Steeg is a charming little village perfect for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing picnic by the lake. The towns are connected by a scenic road that winds along the lake's shoreline, offering incredible vistas at every turn.

Vistas:

The alpine setting of Hallstatt offers a multitude of fantastic lookout points. Of course, you will find a great view on any hike. But three lookouts stand out, and you should visit at least one. As the name suggests, the Staircase to Nothingness is a narrow staircase that leads to a platform that seems to hang in mid-air. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The Five Fingers, a viewing platform that extends over a cliff edge, offers similarly spectacular views. And for the ultimate adrenaline rush, head to the Hallstatt Skywalk, a glass viewing platform that extends out over a sheer drop. The platform offers unparalleled views of the surrounding alpine landscape.
