Highlights:
Lucerne City Center:
The beating heart of Lucerne is its vibrant city center. Straddling the River Reuss, the iconic Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), adorned with 17th-century paintings, takes you back in time. Equally enchanting is the Spreuerbrücke, another of Lucerne's historic wooden bridges, unique for its series of eerie danse macabre paintings. The towering turrets of the Museggmauer, Lucerne's well-preserved medieval city walls, loom large over the cityscape, with nine climbable towers that offer incredible views of the cityscape and the mountainous backdrop. In Lucerne's Old Town, you'll find yourself among historic buildings on cobblestone streets. The Weinmarkt, once the heart of Lucerne's wine trade, is a picturesque square surrounded by beautifully decorated buildings and busy cafes.
Hiking Trails:
In Lucerne and the surrounding area, you will find many idyllic hiking trails. A popular one is the Rotsee shoreline trail, a scenic path that follows the curve of Rotsee lake. Along the way, you'll be treated to uninterrupted views of the lake's shimmering waters, with the cityscape in the background. Or, if you prefer a stroll through the woods, there is an extensive network of trails in the lush canopy of the Bireggwald. From the forest trail, there are incredible views of the city of Lucerne, the lake, and beyond to Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi. Looking for more of a challenge? Then the Felsenweg Bürgenstock (Bürgenstock Cliff Trail) is the perfect answer. This cliff-hugging trail leads through tunnels and over bridges, with views of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps at every turn.
Mount Pilatus:
At 2132 meters, Mount Pilatus, affectionately known as the "Dragon Mountain", is a must-see natural attraction near Lucerne. Ride up on the world's steepest cogwheel railway from Alpnachstadt, or take a breathtaking cable car ride from the town of Kriens. Once at the top, you will be greeted by panoramic views that stretch across Central Switzerland to the edge of France. On Mount Pilatus, numerous hiking trails weave through the rugged terrain, just waiting to be explored. But Pilatus is not the only peak worth climbing in the Lucerne region. Just a stone's throw away is Mount Rigi, the "Queen of Mountains". It can also be reached by a cogwheel train ride, from which you can admire thirteen more lakes in the region.
Boat Tours:
But the most tranquil way to appreciate Lucerne's enchanting landscape is to take a boat tour. The sparkling waters of Lake Lucerne, framed by towering peaks and historic landmarks, create a striking scene. There are many options, from leisurely cruises on Lake Lucerne to themed tours.
