Histoire du voyage

"On the Feast of Stephen, when the snow lay round about..." These lines from the carol "Good King Wenceslas" draw inspiration from Prague's history. Imagine strolling the very streets where the tale unfolds, with the city transformed into a winter wonderland. The cobbled lanes glisten with lights, and various festivities await you. Rich in history and holiday spirit, Prague in December is simply magical.

Good to Know:

  • Getting There: Fly into Prague's international airport, Václav Havel, conveniently located 12 km (7.5 mi) west of the city center. Major airlines from around the world serve this airport, providing easy access.
  • Getting Around: Prague has an efficient public transportation system, including trams, buses, and a metro system. The city center is also very walkable.
  • Where to Stay: Choose accommodations near the historic center, such as Malá Strana or Staré Město, close to the main sights and festive atmosphere. Boutique hotels and quaint guesthouses can make your stay more cozty.
  • How Long to Visit: A 2-3 day trip is enough to see the major attractions in their festive glory.
  • Similar Destinations: Vienna and Budapest are also great places to spend the holidays in Central Europe.

Highlights:

Christmas Markets:

Prague's festive spirit truly shines in its Christmas markets—the Old Town Square bustles with countless stalls selling handcrafted gifts, festive treats and seasonal decorations. Meanwhile, there are fewer stalls on Castle Hill, but the ambiance is just as enchanting and has a quieter and more intimate feel. Be sure to warm your hands and heart with svařák, the Czech version of mulled wine, on your market strolls and enjoy the scent of cinnamon and roasted chestnuts that fills the air.

Try Trdelník:

The epitome of Czech holiday treats is trdelník, a delicious rolled pastry traditionally baked over an open flame. When golden brown, it's sprinkled with sugar and can be filled with various toppings, often soft-serve ice cream, making it an endlessly customizable dessert. Stop by Good Food Coffee and Bakery to try it!

Romantic Late-Night Stroll Along the River:

As the winter night settles over Prague, the city takes on a quieter beauty. The streets, buildings and bridges, all bathed in warm golden light, set the perfect stage for a romantic stroll along the Vltava River.

See the Sights lit up with Christmas Lights:

  • Prague Castle: Towering over the city, Prague Castle is decorated festively during December. Its ancient walls and soaring spires, along with the rest of the town, are cast in a warm glow. Though magnificent year-round, the twinkling Christmas lights make it even more spectacular.
  • Charles Bridge: When the festive season arrives, the most iconic sight of Prague illuminates the statues lining its path, and with the silhouette of the city in the background, every step you take is like walking through a fairy tale. The reflections of the lights on the water below add even more magic to the atmosphere.
  • The Powder Tower: Like almost everything, the Powder Tower, with its intricate Gothic architecture, is majestically adorned with Christmas lights. With the lights, the otherwise gloomy gateway between the Old and New Town now exudes a warmth only seen at Christmas.
